Talent Pipeline

Gem · Software Engineer Intern · Jan – Apr 2026

Background

Gem is a recruiting platform made up of a few products. I worked on the ATS (applicant tracking system), which recruiters use to manage everyone who applies to their jobs. If you've ever applied through something like Ashby or Greenhouse—it's that. Being a startup, there wasn't one tidy intern project. I wore a lot of hats and got moved onto whatever needed help, often pretty quickly.

Building it

The project I spent the most time with was the talent pipeline, the page where recruiters see every applicant and which interview stage they're in. Over the years it had piled up a lot of duplicated code, to the point where changing one part meant hunting down three copies of it. Getting to redesign it and rebuild it from scratch was my favourite part of the term, mostly because it's a page recruiters actually spend their day in.

In between, I jumped onto whatever came up. When a customer asked to see everything that had happened to a job listing, I helped build the activity feed that shows who changed what, and when. I also worked on GDPR retention, which anonymizes a candidate's info once we're no longer allowed to keep it. Not the flashiest work, but it's the kind of thing that really has to be right.

Looking back

Jumping between projects was a lot at first, but it taught me how to get up to speed in an unfamiliar codebase quickly, and how to ship things people were actually waiting on.
